Torn between the many sights of Rome, many visitors during their holiday in Rome seldom manage to visit the former ghetto. A walk through the narrow, quiet streets may well be among the most suggestive impressions. From 1555 to 1848, this district on the side of the Tiber River was bordered by high walls, behind which the Jews had to live together in the smallest of areas and under catastrophic hygienic conditions. The tour leads us back to one of the most tragic epochs of world history, which ended in Rome on October 16, 1943, when 2,091 Jews who were still living in the ghetto at that time were taken away by the Germans.
