Despite its importance for the history of German artists in Rome, the Casino Massimo is as good as mentioned in any German-speaking Rome city guide, which is probably the reason why the place, which is accessible only on certain days and times, so well as nobody visits. Of great interest is the picturesque decor of the villa near the Lateran, which leads us to the circle of artists of the Nazarenes, a group of German painters who was active in Rome and Vienna at the beginning of the 19th century. Her conception of art, which stood in the way of contemporary academic classicism and paved the way for Romanticism, had set the standard for the rediscovery of German and Italian Renaissance painting, with works by Raffael and Albrecht D\u00fcrer becoming frequently read role models. On behalf of the Marchese Massimo, a member of the Roman nobility, worked in the villa from 1817 Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Peter von Cornelius, Philip Veit and Anton Koch.
